A softball umpire who told police he was the victim of an armed robbery ended up arrested on charges that he violated Georgia's tough sex offender laws.
Gerald Stephens, a 48-year-old softball umpire, was charged Thursday with violating Georgia's sex offender registry and making false statements.
Stephens told police he was robbed by three men with guns at a playing field in Woodstock. He said his hands were tied together and his money was stolen by the men, who disappeared into the woods.
Detectives soon discovered he was a sex offender and that he was registered in Douglas County even though he told investigators he lived in Paulding County.
